Caving in Cuivo Mortero de Astrana Arredondo

When we tell you that we have the definitive caving route, it is because we really do. Such a bold statement cannot be taken lightly, but don't worry, we are not exaggerating, this caving trip to Cuivo-Mortero de Astrana, in the Cantabrian town of Arredondo, is a true delight. It is the largest in all of Spain, with its 132 kilometers and worldwide it is ranked number 13. Has it convinced you? Well, keep reading, we have it all planned.

Such a caving route will take us a long time to complete, so we will be on an adventure for around 9 hours. We will take care of the necessary materials and an expert guide who will accompany you at all times. For this excursion through the interior of the earth, we will only travel 2 kilometers from Cuivo-Mortero de Astrana and we will face a difference in altitude of 269 meters.

The caving route through Cuivo-Mortero de Astrana begins in a well about 13 meters deep. We will overcome it with a handrail and a chain to enter a parallel universe where frogs, newts and salamanders reign, all of bright and intense colors that hypnotize. At this point we will pass through a sea of stones and blocks that will eventually take us to a winding underground meander.

At this point the water will be scarce and we will see how its channel gradually becomes blurred until we find a wall that we will have to climb. When we overcome it we will enter its river again and we will be in a gallery that once again shapes itself like a meander, although soon the walls that surround us will lose height, which will lead us to crawl a few meters on the ground.

Once we have crawled a few meters, we reach a head that marks the entrance to the Sala de la Colada, the emblematic gallery of Cuivo de Astrana. The Lada Room in turn represents the beginning of the most fun, because from here comes a long succession of natural pools through which we will have to swim and jump in order to continue. We will take the opportunity to put on our wetsuits near a mystical little lake that precedes all the pools we will come across.

When we pass through this part we install the rappel and descend vertiginously towards the Hall of Loss until we land on an underground bed. With our feet on the ground, we continue until we reach the Spa meander, a section full of mud pools (that's why we said about sportswear, don't mind stains), but don't worry, nature She is wise and you will seewhy.

Immediately afterwards we came across a fork. We will take an exit which is a crack in the ground through which we will have to enter. We will fall on a ramp and find ourselves in La Lavadora, an area that is the antithesis of the Spa meander, since here we will see several natural pools of fresh and translucent waters.

Now comes the real challenge of Cuivo-Mortero de Astrana, the Fallopian Meander. We will leave La Lavadora through a very closed meander, very uncomfortable and narrow steps await us until we reach an exciting rappel. We will descend along its ledge and from here the discomfort ends, reaching the Roscón room, a gallery filled with the largest pools in all of Cuivo-Mortero de Astrana .

We will take advantage of this long succession of pools to cool off and enjoy the surroundings a little, and when we feel that it has been enough we continue to reach the colossal Arch Room. It will be a simple and enjoyable stretch, perfect for regaining strength and calming the body after so much adventure. It will simply be a walk through its interior until you reach the junction with the Leolorna River, a point that represents the connection with the Mortillano system.

From here we are in the final part of our caving route and we will follow the course of the Leolorna upwards to come across a couple of pools until we reach the Mortar ramps. This part takes us to the Blow Hole and we will find some ropes installed to facilitate the exit. Suddenly we will see a beam of light illuminating the entire cave and we will be able to see the exit, thus ending this exciting caving route through Cuivo-Mortero de Astrana.
