What a climbing session is like
A first climbing session is usually on a top rope. The rope runs from your harness up to an anchor and back down to the instructor, who takes in the slack as you go, so a slip just leaves you hanging on the rope. You learn to put on the harness, tie in and use your feet more than your arms. Indoor walls have routes graded by difficulty, and there is also bouldering, on low walls without ropes and with thick mats underneath. A taster session takes one to two hours.
Outdoors, sessions on a crag last half a day or a full day, and many include abseiling, coming back down the rock on the rope. Some providers also run scrambles and mountain days for those who want longer routes, which need a head for heights. Indoor walls work all year, while outdoor climbing needs dry rock and is best from spring to autumn. Climbing shoes and a harness are usually provided, so all you need is clothing you can stretch in.

- Minimum age of 6 to 10, most often 8, depending on the provider.

Frequently asked questions
How long is it valid?
5 years from purchase. The exact date is printed on the voucher.
What if they don't fancy climbing?
The voucher works for any other experience on Yumping.
Can it be used in several goes?
Yes. Whatever isn't spent stays in their Yumping wallet.
What if they're scared of heights?
Nobody has to climb higher than they want. Coming down is just a matter of sitting back in the harness while the instructor lowers you.
What happens if it rains on an outdoor day?
Wet rock isn't safe to climb. If the session can't go ahead, you agree a new date with the provider.
Can two people climb together?
Yes, sessions are often for pairs or small groups. Each climber pays for a place: the voucher covers what it reaches and you add the rest, or you give two vouchers.
