What a canoeing trip is like
In the UK a canoe usually means an open, Canadian-style boat for two or three people, paddled with single-bladed paddles. It's more stable than a kayak and carries more, so it suits families, couples and journeys with a picnic or camping kit on board. The session starts on the bank with how to steer and how to paddle in time with your partner, and then you set off along a river, canal or lake with the guide. Taster sessions take around two hours, and half-day and full-day trips are common.
Some rivers have small rapids, while others are flat and slow, and there are journeys of several days with nights spent camping by the water. Canals bring features you won't find on a lake, such as tunnels and aqueducts that carry you high above a valley. Canoeing runs mainly from spring to autumn. Expect wet feet: wear trainers you don't mind soaking, bring a change of clothes and, in Scotland in summer, some midge repellent.

Frequently asked questions
How long is it valid?
5 years from purchase. The exact date is printed on the voucher.
What if they don't fancy canoeing?
The voucher works for any other experience on Yumping.
Can it be used in several goes?
Yes. Whatever isn't spent stays in their Yumping wallet.
Canoe or kayak, what's the difference?
A canoe is open, shared by two or three people and paddled with a single blade. A kayak is usually for one or two, and you use a paddle with a blade at each end.
What if the river is too high?
After heavy rain rivers can rise and become unsafe. If the provider cancels, you pick a new date with them.
Can three of us share one canoe?
Many canoes take two or three people. Each seat is a place: the voucher covers what it can and you pay the difference, or you give a voucher each.
