Where are the best places for an off-road buggy ride in Surrey?

Buggies are not road legal vehicles, so you can’t go for a drive around the highways and byways of Surrey in one of these machines. But you wouldn’t want to anyway, because it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun as bombing around in the mud and grass! The locations for doing this activity in this county are all on private property.

• Salfords: Located between two airports - Gatwick International Airport and Redhill Aerodrome - there’s a venue in Salfords where you can get some air of your own, by putting your foot down in an off-road buggy and aiming for a hill. The action takes place on a large site, where dirt tracks wind around fields, along the banks of a lake and through woodland. All kinds of twists and turns await you here, and to take them on you have a choice of a number of fantastic off-road machines.

• Felbridge: This activity team is based right on the border of Surrey and West Sussex, just an hour’s train ride from central London in Felbridge. They’ve got decades of experience putting together fantastic activity packages for clients, and some of their most popular attractions are this vehicles. Alongside the classic speed machines, they’ve also got some zany vehicles that require unique driving techniques and are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

• Where you are: If you’ve got a suitable outdoor space, you can arrange for a fleet of buggies to come to you for a personalised activity. This is a popular service for fetes and festivals, as well as big birthday parties or wedding receptions with a difference. Your guests will love the opportunity to take a spin in an exciting buggy at your event, and they’re sure to talk about it for years to come.

What kinds of vehicles can you get your hands on?

Both off-road venues in Surrey boast a squadron of Rage Buggies. These are vehicles of the simple and speedy variety, with open bodywork, big wheels and loud engines. While they’re not as sophisticated as other models, they’re perfect for whizzing around a field, racing your friends and blowing the cobwebs away. You’ll find single seat Rage Buggies in Felbridge, while the Salfords venue has the two seat variety, with huge 690cc engines - both have automatic gearboxes, so you can focus on the fun.

One of the specialities of the Salfords site is off-road karts manufactured by Polaris. Unlike low slung of the previous ones, Polaris are designed to tackle all kinds of terrain without getting stuck or losing their balance. The models on offer here are the RZR which has big wheels, good suspension, two seats and four wheel drive, and the ACE, a child-sized version with enough power to please any kid, and safety features to put their parents at ease.

We promised you something crazy in Surrey, and this is it. The team at Felbridge have Powerturn Buggies, vehicles with side-by-side seats, each equipped with a hand-throttle. Each one controls one wheel, so accelerating, turning and braking is a feat of teamwork that takes some getting used to, but is a whole lot of fun!

What are the options for organising an experience?

- It’s possible to organise a buggy driving experience in Surrey for an individual, to get your hands on your buggy of choice and take it for a spin around the track, or off-road through woods and water. You can enjoy this for just 20 or 30 minutes, or go for an hour’s ride and really get your teeth into it.

- A more common way to enjoy this experience is as a group along with your best friends or family. Sessions of an hour or 2 hours can be organised here with a number of vehicles that corresponds to the size of the group. Everyone will get a turn in the driver’s seat, and the passenger seat if there is one, and you can compete with each other to pull off the coolest stunts and set the fastest lap times.

- Or you can have it all on your terms, by inviting the activity provider team to your event. These sessions are tailor made, so you choose the duration and the number and type of vehicles, as well as the exact location in the area.

Who can drive them?

Like those of the Rage classification have a wheel and pedals layout that’s familiar to anyone who drives a car. And like a car, everyone needs to be around 17 years old or more in order to drive one, though a driving licence isn’t essential. But youngsters can get behind the wheel too, in the specially designed Polaris Ace. These are built for those aged between 10 and 15 years old. If you want to make it a family affair, the older members of the family can get on quad bikes and accompany the buggy pilot around the track. The full size Polaris RZR can be driven by anyone over the age of 16.
