Kitesurfing is a unique water sport, allowing you to harness the elements and experience intense, adrenaline-fuelled moments.

Kesurf safety instructions

However, it can be extremely dangerous if basic rules are not followed.

That’s why the first tip is to enrol in a kitesurfing school during the learning phase. Self-teaching, even with an enthusiast, can lead to bad habits that are hard to break later and may prove hazardous.

Also consider taking out insurance covering kitesurfing risks. A school will also advise you on these formalities.

The 10 Commandments of Kitesurfing:

  1. 1 - Never fly solo: Ask another kitesurfer to assist you – for launching/landing your kite and in case of emergencies.

  2. 2 - Use suitable equipment: Your gear must be fit for kitesurfing, compliant with current standards, recent, in good condition, and suited to your size, weight, and skill level.
NB: Ensure your kite has a Quick Release system to instantly cancel traction in danger.

  3. 3 - Ride in permitted zones: Avoid kitesurfing in windsurfing areas or near swimmers. On the beach, ensure ample space to prepare your gear. Some beaches ban kitesurfers – always check. Kitesurfing safety rules protect both riders and bystanders.

  4. 4 - Scout the spot before launching: Even in authorised zones, watch for land/sea obstacles (trees, boats, swimmers, nets, rocks, posts...).

  5. 5 - Weather conditions: Never ride with offshore winds, cliff winds, or during storms/strong winds.

  6. 6 - Line check: Inspect lines before each session for wear and verify the release system. Never touch taut flying/bridle lines once underway.

  7. 7 - Leash caution: A board leash is discouraged to avoid rebound injuries (if used, a helmet is mandatory – unrelated but an impact vest is highly recommended). The kite leash is compulsory: attach before launch and detach before exiting the water.

  8. 8 - Be courteous: Follow kitesurfing right-of-way rules where possible, but recognise that real-world scenarios (beginners, tricky weather, obstacles) may make strict adherence impossible. The golden rule? Avoid collisions.

  9. 9 - Sand your kite after beaching: Prevents relaunching. Disconnect lines to avoid accidental power-up.

  10. 10 - Stay calm and use common sense!

With these navigation rules and safety guidelines mastered, you’re set to thrive and progress in optimal conditions.
