What is skydiving?
Also known as skydiving, this extreme sport involves leaping from at least 4,000 metres - making a genuine leap into the void from an aircraft door - and freefalling for one minute before deploying the parachute to enjoy the descent amid thermal updrafts.
Where and when did skydiving originate?
We must go back to 1485 to trace this sport's roots: the first parachute sketch was actually drawn by Leonardo Da Vinci in Italy, featuring a pyramidal design with a starched linen structure.
The design was never built, and we'd wait 300 years to see the first three-dimensional prototype by André-Jacques Garnerin, who jumped from a hot air balloon.
By 1900, techniques improved dramatically and skydiving became both a civilian and military activity. Today it's an increasingly popular recreational sport with numerous specialised disciplines.
How to approach this sport?
If you're reading this article, you're likely among the many who want to experience the unparalleled thrill only freefall can deliver! For your first skydive, you'll need to visit one of many professional centres that operate above authorised drop zones.
At each location, you'll find certified instructors who'll explain everything about the activity: from jump procedures to technical equipment operation, from in-flight safety protocols to different skydiving styles.
Beginners naturally start with a classic tandem jump - an accompanied dive where you leap from the aircraft with an instructor who controls the entire descent, ensuring a unique yet completely safe experience.
What does the experience actually involve?
After your initial briefing, you'll board a plane or helicopter to reach 4,000-4,500 metres altitude where you'll be harnessed to your instructor. Then you'll leap from the aircraft and experience 60 seconds of freefall.
Following this adrenaline-packed minute, the parachute deploys and you'll enjoy an 8-10 minute canopy flight, marvelling at breathtaking landscapes while riding thermal currents. Finally, your instructor will ensure a soft landing.
If you're looking for the perfect place for your first jump in Italy, you're spoilt for choice!
