The Origins of Hang Gliding

In the late 1960s, American engineer Francis Melvin Rogallo built the first prototype of what would become the aircraft we know today: starting from a square design, subsequent developments led to the creation of a delta-shaped wing, the famous Rogallo Wing, named after its inventor which in turn gave its name to hang gliding.

This all took place in the United States during the post-McCarthy era. And in Europe? The first free flight on the Old Continent dates back to 4 November 1971. Where? In Italy, naturally – land of great inventors, innovators and artists. The first European hang glider took off at about 1,400 metres above ground near Moltrasio on Lake Como, marking the beginning of the aircraft's history in our skies.

How Is a Hang Glider Constructed?

The hang glider falls into the category of heavier-than-air aircraft. Its structure constitutes a kind of perfect machine, as each tube (made from lightweight aluminium alloys), cable (braided steel), sail (synthetic fabric) and bolt is designed and assembled to create a fail-proof and, above all, safe aircraft.

One factor that doesn't depend on the hang glider's quality but which it must adhere to before and during each flight is the set of meteorological conditions. Hang gliding is strongly influenced by weather conditions. This makes it – together with the absence of an engine and the pilot's commanding position – the aircraft that most closely replicates the natural flight of birds, recreating that same sensation of freedom and control afforded by silence and body positioning.

Originally designed for individual experiences, recent years have seen the rise of tandem hang gliding in the tourism sector. With a specialised guide, this aircraft allows tourists to enjoy an incredible experience thousands of metres above ground without needing to do anything except relish the aerial spectacle.

How Do You Pilot a Hang Glider?

The beauty of hang gliding also lies in its remarkable accessibility: anyone can try this incredible experience of soaring through the air at least once in their lifetime – and most importantly, doing so just like birds. The pilot typically controls the aircraft through body movement on the hang glider's centre of gravity; by shifting their weight on the control bar, the pilot influences direction and speed while secured in a harness that protects from cold and ensures complete safety.

Moreover, there are numerous possible manoeuvres when piloting a hang glider, all allowing for a unique and liberated flying experience where each pilot can choose their preferred altitude. Pitch up to gain altitude; dive to descend; turn left or right depending on your desired flight path.

Depending on its composition and whether it's a standard or competition wing, the aircraft can typically cover distances ranging from 10 to 17 km.
