When approximately 5,000 years ago hunting became both a common and vital practice for survival, the bow and arrow became indispensable tools.

Over the years this implement was even used for defence in wars, and centuries later archery has become an Olympic sport, specifically since 1900 at the Paris Olympics. Though we want you to enjoy it as another experience, as an adventure sport to enjoy during your leisure time.

Archery experiences in Spain

Ever wanted to be like Robin Hood?

Have you felt tempted to become a professional archer? Are you someone who enjoys playing darts with friends in your free time? If you've answered yes to any of these questions then archery is the sport you've been looking for.

All you'll need to do is choose where to practise this activity. Many multi-adventure companies include archery as one of their most popular activities. You'll learn how to practise it and whether you have prior experience or not, you'll leave wanting more. Don't worry about equipment as they'll provide everything: bow, arrows and target are the main elements, with optional extras like an arm guard or chest protector to prevent the string catching your clothes.

The best equipment

Regardless of which archery school you choose, you'll have  the most qualified instructors  who'll teach you the best tricks and techniques.

The first thing to consider is getting the stance right when holding the bow, which should be with the opposite hand to your dominant eye. To shoot the arrow you'll need to adopt the posture your instructor shows you, positioning your upper body perpendicular to the target with your feet shoulder-width apart.

Ready to nock the arrow? Tilt the bow towards the ground and hook the arrow's nock onto the string. Arrows typically have three fletchings at the end - one should face away from the bow. Prepare to shoot, aim, hold the string with three fingers, draw it back to your face and... release!

Types of archery

There are various archery disciplines - just choose whichever appeals most or suits your goals, as it's practised for different purposes. You can select from these main types:

  • Target archery (outdoor)
  • Indoor archery
  • Field archery
  • Long-distance archery
  • Run archery
  • Ski archery
  • 3D forest course

Some people simply focus on hitting the bullseye without competitive drive, purely for enjoyment.  Others prefer making it a personal challenge and join federations to compete with archers from everywhere.

There are also those who enjoy bowhunting, combining two sports: hunting or fishing with archery. This requires separate explanation though, as there are comprehensive national and international regulations governing it.

You'll also find other competition formats like clout shooting, flight archery, field archery, ski archery, 3D courses... Other variants include Paralympic archery with its own rules and characteristics.

If you're undecided, don't hesitate - it's a fantastic way to develop new skills and unwind during your leisure time.
