In this article, we won’t detail the physics behind balloon ascent. Instead, we’ll focus on that mysterious quality which breaks down barriers – the pure sensation of freedom after takeoff.
This is precisely what the Handibulle Association wanted to share with children with disabilities and elderly people in the Poitou-Charentes region.

In partnership with Montgolfière Sensation, Handibulle provides a fully accessible basket – unique in France – for people with reduced mobility who dream of flying. Available since May 2011, and their projects don’t stop there!
Disability can also be an opportunity to push one’s limits, regardless of life circumstances. Handibulle demonstrates this by training the first disabled hot air balloon pilot and advocating for a disabled sports category within the French Federation of Aerostatics, a world first in hot air ballooning!
Michael Lassagne, the project’s founder, answered our questions:
Yumping: Can someone with reduced mobility board a standard hot air balloon?
Michael Lassagne: Yes, but with great difficulty and without meeting full flight safety standards.
Y.F. What are the limitations?
M.L. The person must remain standing, as conventional baskets aren’t designed for wheelchair anchoring.
Y.F. Montgolfière Sensation has France’s only accessible basket. How do you ensure passenger comfort and safety during flight?
M.L. Through wheelchair floor rail fixings, safety harnesses, and a glazed basket for optimal visibility. Our Civil Aviation-certified pilots receive specific training for flights with disabled passengers.
Y.F. How do you fund flights for children with disabilities at highly preferential rates?
M.L. Through private partners and local authorities. Our 2012 budget isn’t finalised yet – demand is so high we’re still seeking partners.
Y.F. What’s the profile of people who can fly with you?
M.L. Anyone. This project has successfully opened ballooning to a much wider audience.
Y.F. Your next goal is having a disabled pilot compete in national and international championships. What’s the status?
M.L. Currently fundraising for training (€6,000-€7,000). We’ve already selected our candidate: Philippe Croizon!
Y.F. In Handibulle’s history, is there one memory that particularly stands out?
M.L. A paraplegic lady who cried for 20 minutes upon learning she’d fly – her lifelong dream, shared with family. Every flight creates unforgettable emotional moments.

The passion for adventure sports and extreme activities is full of such stories.
Thanks to dedicated enthusiasts, hot air ballooning is now accessible to people with reduced mobility. This driving force breaks down barriers, enabling people to live their dreams despite daily challenges.
A life lesson that reminds us we’re all equal.
