What a first scuba dive is like
A first dive, usually called a try dive or discover scuba session, starts with a briefing on the kit and the basics: breathing through the regulator, clearing your mask and equalising the pressure in your ears. Then you go into a pool or calm, shallow water with the instructor at arm's length, practise those skills and swim around underwater for the first time. The session usually takes two to three hours, of which around 30 minutes to an hour is spent underwater.
If you want to keep going, the Open Water Diver course is the first full qualification and lets you dive to 18 metres with a buddy anywhere in the world. It combines theory, pool sessions and open water dives over a few days. Qualified divers can book guided dives, boat dives on reefs and wrecks, and further courses such as Advanced Open Water. Pool sessions run all year, while sea diving around the UK is best from late spring to autumn, when the water is warmer and visibility better.
What you need
- Minimum age of 8 to 12, most often 10, depending on the dive centre and the course.

- You'll fill in a diving medical form, and some answers mean you'll need a doctor's certificate.

Frequently asked questions
How long is it valid?
5 years from purchase. The exact date is printed on the voucher.
What if they don't fancy diving?
The voucher works for any other experience on Yumping.
Can it be used in several goes?
Yes. Whatever isn't spent stays in their Yumping wallet.
Can someone who has never dived do it?
Yes, try dives are designed for first-timers. They take place in a pool or shallow water, with the instructor close at all times.
What if the sea conditions are poor?
The instructor decides whether it's safe to dive. If not, you choose a new date with the dive centre.
Can two of us dive together?
Yes, diving is always done in pairs or small groups. Each diver pays for a place: the voucher covers what it reaches and you add the rest, or you give two vouchers.
