What a jet ski session is like
A jet ski session starts on the beach with a safety briefing, a wetsuit and a buoyancy aid. The instructor shows you the throttle, the steering and how to climb back on if you fall in, and then you head out to a marked area or follow the instructor along the coast. You can ride solo, on your own machine, or duo, two on one ski, taking turns to drive. Sessions last from 30 minutes to two hours, and guided tours go further along the coastline to sea caves and cliffs.
For those who want to ride on their own later, the one-day RYA PWC course (personal watercraft) is the recognised UK qualification, with theory on land and practice on the water. Sessions depend on the sea state and the wind, and the provider may change the route or the time on the day. Some beaches have no changing rooms, so it's easiest to arrive in your swimwear.
What you need
- To drive, the minimum age is 12 to 16 for most sessions, and some providers ask for 21 and a photo ID.
- Passengers can ride from 12 or 14, and at some providers teenagers of 13 to 16 drive with an adult behind them.
- Some ask you to swim at least 20 metres, others only that you feel confident in the water.
- Some providers don't accept riders with back problems or injuries.
- The wetsuit and buoyancy aid are usually provided. Bring swimwear, a towel and spare clothes.

What if the sea is rough?
If the sea or the wind make it unsafe, the session doesn't go out, and they agree a new date with the provider.
Can two people go on one jet ski?
Yes, many sessions are duo, two on one ski. If it costs more than the voucher, they pay the difference, or you give two vouchers.
Do they need a licence?
No licence is needed for sessions with an instructor. The RYA PWC course is for those who want to ride on their own afterwards.
