What a high ropes course is like
A high ropes course is a circuit of rope bridges, wobbly beams, nets, swings and zip wires strung between trees or poles, several metres off the ground. You wear a harness clipped to a safety line, and after a briefing on how the clips work, you move from one element to the next at your own pace. Many courses have a lower route for younger children and higher, harder routes for teenagers and adults, and plenty finish with a zip wire. Sessions last from one to three hours.
The sector also includes zip wire sessions on their own, tower drops and leaps of faith from the top of a pole, low ropes courses close to the ground and army-style assault courses through mud and over walls. Many venues run sessions for birthday parties and groups. Courses are outdoors, and high wind or lightning can stop a session. Wear clothes you can stretch in and trainers with a good grip.
What you need
- Minimum age from 5 to 9 for most courses, and 16 or 19 for some adult sessions.
- Maximum weight from 14 to 18 stone, depending on the course.
- Some courses ask for a minimum height of 1.2 m.
- Not suitable during pregnancy or with neck or back injuries.
- Tower drops and some zip wires mean climbing steep steps to the top.
