The lords of the night were the ancient police force of the city of Venice, so called because they caught criminals in the heart of the night, the time when criminals were most likely to commit crimes. Once captured they were taken to the cells of the Palazzo delle Prigioni Nove, where they were subjected to torture and interrogations before being brought to trial. The court was located inside the Palazzo Ducale, adjacent to the prisons, and the prisoners had to cross the famous Bridge of Sighs which connected the two buildings from inside.
