Built at the behest of Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, who wanted to revive the magnificence of the courts of Ferrara and Rome, it is strongly inspired by the well-known Villa Adriana.
The architectural project of the Villa bears the signature of the painter and architect Pirro Ligorio and was created by the court architect Alberto Galvani: the entire building, however, was decorated and painted by the major artists ofthe late Roman Mannerist era.
