Walk through the Barrio de Las Letras

Right in the center of the Madrid capital we find this itinerary through a neighborhood whose name reveals its origins. The Barrio de Las Letras, known today for the friendliness of its terraces and its intimate alleys, owes its nomenclature to past moments in which it served as home to the greatest references of the literature of the Century of Gold.

Few great names escape the history of this corner, like Cervantes himself, passing through Quevedo and his peculiar way of interpreting the world, until reaching the works of Lope de Vega. It was they who back in the 16th century opened the doors of a path that would continue until reaching the 20th century. From their windows they watched the romantic Bécquer and Jacinto Benavente pass through their best years.

Beyond the precise history of dates and data, it was in the Barrio de Las Letras where the personal stories of these characters were developed, seasoned with actors, nobles and other illustrious people.
