What to expect from an airsoft game

Airsoft is a team game played with replica guns that fire small 6 mm plastic pellets, or BBs. It feels closer to a military exercise than paintball: the guns copy real models and the games are built like missions, with objectives such as defending a building, taking a position or escorting a player across the site. Most sites are woodland or old buildings, and some are indoor arenas for close-quarters games. A session usually lasts from a couple of hours to a full day.

After a safety briefing the marshals hand out the gun, a full-face mask and the pellets, and they run each game. The pellets leave no mark, so airsoft relies on honesty: when you're hit, you call it and walk off. A hit stings, especially at close range. Beginners use the site's hire kit, and regular players bring their own. Wear sturdy boots, long sleeves and old clothes, ideally in dark colours.

What you need

  • Minimum age of 11 to 13, most often 12, depending on the site.
  • Under-16s play with an adult, and under-18s need a parent's consent at some sites.
  • Some sites don't permit you to play if you're pregnant or have a heart condition.

Frequently asked questions

How long is it valid?

5 years from purchase. The exact date is printed on the voucher.

What if they don't fancy airsoft?

The voucher works for any other experience on Yumping.

Can it be used in several goes?

Yes. Whatever isn't spent stays in their Yumping wallet.

Does it hurt?

A pellet hit stings for a moment, more at short range. The mask protects the face and eyes, and long sleeves take the edge off the rest.

Do they need their own gear?

No. Hire packages cover the gun, the mask and the pellets, so a first-timer only needs suitable clothes.

Can a group go together?

Yes, it's played in teams. Each player pays for a place: the voucher covers what it reaches and you add the difference, or each person gets a voucher.
