Snorkelling is one of the most straightforward yet thrilling water sports, enabling exploration in various bodies of water, such as lakes and seas. It’s an excellent alternative for those unable to take up scuba diving. Unlike scuba diving, snorkelling does not require handling complex specialised gear and is entirely accessible to all family members.
Snorkelling is a fantastic extreme sport that allows us to do these two things. Thanks to a mask and snorkel tube, we can redirect our breathing and enjoy excellent visibility underwater.
In this article, we’ll explore two extreme zones—the North and South of Mexico—uncovering the best spots for snorkelling in the country:
Baja California. The famous peninsula of the Mexican Pacific is separated from the mainland by the stunning Sea of Cortez. A unique location in terms of marine life, as the distinct nutrients and clarity of its waters have fostered an immense and varied population. It’s also a prime spot for whale watching during their migration. Here are some key destinations in this region:
- Guadalupe Island: A spectacular island measuring 35 by 10 kilometres, teeming with underwater life—lobsters, abalone, sea lions, seals, and much more. Its mountainous cliffs plunge to depths of 850 metres below sea level. A breathtaking natural destination, unique in this part of the country.
- Revillagigedo Islands: A 25-hour voyage from Cabo San Lucas, this mesmerising site is famed for sightings of numerous shark species, but you’ll also encounter friendly giant manta rays, moray eels, butterflyfish, blue lobsters, octopuses, and endless marine life.
- Cabo Pulmo: Perhaps one of Mexico’s most awe-inspiring locations, this natural reserve hosts a unique marine diversity and one of only three living reefs left in North America. At 25,000 years old, this underwater paradise is well worth a visit.
Mexican Caribbean. This tropical sea, renowned for its warmth and dazzling turquoise-blue waters, is home to stunning marine life. Here, you’ll find part of the world’s second-largest reef, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, stretching 1,000 kilometres from Mexico to Honduras. Its waters boast extraordinary destinations with spectacular underwater life, such as:
- Cozumel: Praised by the famed French explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau as one of the world’s best diving islands due to its marine richness. This small island (48 by 14.8 kilometres) features 3 natural reserve parks thanks to its abundant marine flora and fauna. Its underwater topography is part of the Great Maya Reef, offering exceptional clarity with crystal-clear waters and white sand.
- Isla Mujeres: A tiny island with gorgeous snorkelling spots, thanks to its pristine coasts and authentic marine life. Beyond its picturesque beauty, it provides serene snorkelling excursions due to calm currents and translucent waters.
- Majahual: This small village invites you to explore Mexico’s largest atoll, Banco Chinchorro.
