Many of the accidents we expose ourselves to during extreme sports can be avoided, as most cases result from human error caused by carelessness or lack of foresight. When preparing for an adventure day, we must account for all relevant factors, such as the weather forecast, who accompanies us, and activity planning.

Common sense is the most important thing, as we must know our limits and avoid trying to mimic more skilled friends. Canyoning is a sport with varying difficulties and levels, so the ideal is to choose a route suited to your abilities. A frequent and serious mistake is overestimating your skills or attempting to demonstrate strength or technical prowess you don’t possess.

Another major error is neglecting to wear a helmet, which is absolutely essential. At any moment, you could lose balance, fall, or be struck on the head by a rock or broken branch.

A good neoprene wetsuit is necessary to protect your body: remember, you’ll be in constant contact with water and risk hypothermia at any time. While summer heat might tempt you to ditch the suit, aside from cold, minor accidents like scratches, bruises, or unexpected prolonged exposure to water can occur.

Proper canyoning equipment is non-negotiable—starting this sport with insufficient or inadequate gear is a serious risk. Also, don’t forget water and snacks.

Team organisation is critical, as each member plays a key role during the canyon descent. Ideally, the most experienced person should lead and coordinate the group. A canyoning instructor at the rear is advisable to monitor all participants. If moving in pairs, keep visual contact to prevent isolation or mishaps.

Lastly, never practise adventure sports under the influence of alcohol or drugs—this compromises control and endangers everyone. Choose a reputable canyoning school and enjoy this thrilling sport safely.

Soon, the thaw will begin, filling canyons with water and turning them into incredible natural waterparks! If you’re inexperienced, consider waiting until April when water flows are less intense.
