Water sports are a perfect option for enjoying leisure time throughout the entire year. On 20th October, the winter season of kitesurfing in Valencia was officially launched with a wave session that only the most daring riders attempted.

This year's low temperatures seemed slow to arrive, but just a month ago south-southwesterly winds appeared, perfect for kitesurfing at the only spot in the Valencian Community where you can ride with this wind direction. Which beach are we talking about? Poniente Beach or "Arenal Bol" in the town of Calpe.

This isn't a particularly consistent wind, as it only appears occasionally and you need considerable luck to catch it. When it does arrive though, it comes in strong, creating higher quality waves than those produced by easterly or gregal winds (east and northeast respectively). This is why riders from across the region flock here to enjoy the winds, crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery of Morro de Toix and the Peñón de Ifach.

 Kitesurfing in Calpe

Now it's time to bid farewell to sailing in sunshine and swimwear, as we enter the season of wetsuits and facing the cooler water temperatures (though the Mediterranean remains relatively generous, rarely dropping below 10°C/15°C in winter). If you've done any kitesurfing courses during summer, now's the time to ride strong winds and carve through powerful breakers.

Riding with left-hand winds might disorient those without much experience, as you'll potentially need to ditch your 12m kite in favour of an 8m.

Some of the most appealing winter spots in the Valencian Community include: San Juan Beach with its easterly and gregal storms; Gurugú Beach in Castellón with similar winds; Ciutat Beach or La Villajoyosa; Lisa Beach in Santa Pola with south-southwesterlies; and finally Dorado-Estany Beach, known for incredible waves during gregal and easterly seasons.
