What to expect from an advanced driving course
An advanced driving course takes place on a closed track or a skid pan, away from traffic, with an instructor in the passenger seat. The most common is skid control training: on a wet, low-grip surface, you learn what to do when the car loses grip, how to correct a skid and how to brake hard while keeping control. These are situations that are hard to practise safely on the road. Sessions run from two hours to half a day, one-to-one or in a group.
The sector also includes stunt driving masterclasses, where you learn handbrake turns and precision driving around cones, and one-to-one rally tuition on gravel. For those too young to drive, there are passenger stunt rides alongside a professional driver. On a skid pan the surface is wet on purpose, so rain is no problem for that kind of session. Bring your driving licence on the day, and wear comfortable flat shoes.
